Preface

It was in Chiang Mai 2019, I first get my Thai massage certification from Ong's Thai Massage School. I was amazed by how many benefits Thai massage can offer. It is important that you be mindful of the following factors when giving someone a massage: your posture, safety skills, appropriate duration for each body part and if any oils/lotions are needed.


My husband suffered from fibromyalgia for more than 5 years from now, with the help of Thai massage, it's a miracle to see my him not suffering in pain and his mood is more stable. So I am really grateful to Ong's Thai Massage School for their help in helping my husband recover from fibromyalgia.


Regularly receiving a massage is an excellent way to relax and release tension in your body. It can also help you sleep better, reduce stress, improve moods, and so much more! But before you go out and make an appointment with a masseuse, or start selling massages yourself (if you plan to have the certification), there are some things that it's important to know. This blog post will cover all of those topics for you!

The definition and purpose of a massage is to provide relief for bodily aches, pains, or soreness by applying pressure on targeted areas. Massage therapy also improves function in joints, reduces tension on tendons and ligaments, stimulates your nervous system to help manage pain more effectively, relieves muscular discomfort caused by repetitive motion. What are the different styles of massages, techniques, their benefits, and which one is for you

Swedish Massage

Swedish massage is a gentle full-body massage that can help release muscle knots, and it's also great for when you want to fully relax during your session. For this type of massages, the therapist will cover you with a sheet while lying on your back so they don't accidentally touch any private areas in case underwear are still worn.

 

The massage therapist will use a combination of kneading, long, flowing strokes in the direction of the heart followed by deep circular motions for an all-over body experience. They'll also apply vibration and tapping to passive joint movement techniques so you can find relief from chronic pain one session at a time! A Swedish massage usually lasts for 60–90 minutes.


Swedish massage is beneficial for those seeking relief from minor pain or stress. It's also a good choice of therapy if you're new to massages.


Hot stone Massage

Hot stone massage is becoming a popular form of therapeutic treatment for people with muscle pain and tension or anyone who wants to relax. This type of massages starts out like any other Swedish style, but the therapist uses hot stones instead their hands in order to effectively ease your muscles and promote relaxation while improving blood flow throughout your body.


Hot stone treatments may help:

-lower stress levels 

-relieve chronic aches 

-increase circulation


When you go to a hot stone massage, your therapist will place heated stones on different parts of your body while using Swedish techniques. They may hold the stone as they apply gentle pressure with their hands and then switch to cold stones for contrast or just use one type throughout the session. You’ll be fully covered by sheets except where they do work such as around your neck, back, shoulders or feet.


A typical session lasts 90 minutes from start-to-finish but can last longer depending on what is needed during that time period.

The heat of the hot stone massage is said to increase blood flow, loosen muscles and reduce tension. This type of massage usually costs a little more than your average Swedish one because it can be much longer in duration with up to three stones applied at once - giving you an even better bang for your buck!


Aromatherapy Massage

Aromatherapy massages are best for people who want to have an emotional healing component to their massage. This type of massage can help:


-boost your mood 

-reduce stress and anxiety, as well as symptoms of depression that you may be experiencing 

-relieve muscle tension with the use of essential oils such as peppermint or lavender oil (which is diluted before being applied) 

-relieve pain using therapeutic-grade lotions or creams made from ingredients like honey, shea butter, olive oil.


The massage therapist will help you relax and soothe your mind, body, and spirit by giving a full-body massage while inhaling essential oils through a diffuser. The aromatherapy is 60–90 minutes long with the option to wear underwear or not according to personal preference.

Aromatherapy combines the gentle touch of a Swedish massage with the addition of essential oils. If you're sensitive to smells or have been exposed before, this type of massage may not be for you!


Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage uses more pressure than a Swedish Massage. It’s a good option if you have chronic muscle problems, such as soreness, injury or imbalance and it can help relieve tight muscles, chronic pain and anxiety.


Deep Tissue massages are different from other types of massages because the therapist will use slow strokes with deep finger pressure to release tension in your deepest layers of muscles by using techniques like kneading and friction among others!


One thing that sets Deep Tissue apart is that they don't need clothes off for this type but instead wear their underwear which makes them feel less exposed during treatment while still being able to get all the benefits from getting an amazing massage not just on your back but also around key areas.


The deep tissue massage is the best type of therapy for those with chronic pain or tension in their muscles. But it's important to be aware that this can often cause soreness and discomfort, so only get a session if you're comfortable with pressure on your body!


Sports Massage

Sports massage is a great choice if you are an athlete and want to ensure that your muscles stay healthy. It can help prevent sports injuries, increase flexibility, relieve pain from the repetitive use of specific muscle groups. Sports massage also reduces anxiety by relieving tension in those tight areas which may be holding you back form performing at your best level!


A sports massage is a full-body or focused, pain relieving treatment for athletes and active people. The therapist will use deep pressure to release the tension in your muscles while alternating with soothing strokes depending on what you need most at that time.


You can wear clothing during this procedure if it’s thin enough so the therapist has easy access to your body without causing any discomfort. It usually lasts about 60–90 minutes long but may be shorter if necessary based on how much work needs done in such a short amount of time.


If you want to improve flexibility and sports performance, reduce your risk for injury or even just temporarily relieve pain from repetitive muscle use then a sport massage may be the solution.


Trigger Point Massage

Those who have injuries, chronic pain or a specific issue should use trigger point massages to help relieve their symptoms. These types of massage can focus on relieving tight muscle tissue in the body known as "trigger points". Trigger points are often what cause other parts of one's body feel discomfort and by focusing on them you can reduce your pain.


Trigger point massage is the perfect way to relieve tension and relax your body. The therapist will use a variety of techniques, from broad strokes that are gentle on sensitive areas like joints and muscles or intense pressure when needed in order for you to feel fully relaxed by the end! If wearing heavy clothes makes it difficult for them, don't worry- light clothing can be worn throughout most sessions depending on how much work needs done.


The session usually lasts about an hour with 60 minutes being spent focusing on specific tense spots.

Reflexology Massage

Reflexologists use gentle-to-firm pressure in different areas of the foot, hand & ear during this one hour massage session so that you can wear light clothing while receiving treatment from either male or female practitioners.


Reflexology is a practice that focuses on pressure points in your feet, hands and ears. This option works best if you're uncomfortable being touched over your entire body (could be clothed).


Shiatsu Massage

Shiatsu massage is perfect for those who want to feel relaxed and relieve stress, pain, or tension. It's a Japanese type of massage that:


-promotes emotional and physical calmness 

-helps you release anxiety as well as depression-inducing toxins from the body 

-may help reduce headache symptoms (though further research is needed)


Shiatsu massages are a type of manual therapy that use pressure points to work out pain from the muscles and joints. They can be thought of as an alternative medicine, or they might just feel more like getting your very own personal massage therapist! Shiatsus typically last for 60-90 minutes depending on how in depth you want it done.

Thai Massage

A sequence of movements that mimic yoga stretches will work your entire body as you get adjusted into various positions on the table. You should wear loose clothing during this experience- it might feel tight at first but once the session starts loosening up!


Thai massage is a type of treatment which utilizes stretching, joint manipulation and deep tissue work. Unlike other types of massages where the patient removes their clothes or wears loose clothing that allows them to be fully exposed during the session, Thai Massage leaves you as clothed as when you came in.


Prenatal Massage

Prenatal massage is a safe way for women to get a massage during pregnancy. It can help reduce body aches, stress and muscle tension which are common in the third trimester of your pregnancy.


Prenatal massages should not be attempted before around 10 weeks into your first trimester because there may still be risks involved with miscarriage if one were to happen at that time due to possible complications from certain essential oils used in these types of treatments during this period or other factors you could mention like hormonal changes etc.


Prenatal massage uses mild pressure similar to Swedish massage, and is used on pregnant women. The therapist will focus on areas such as your lower back, hips, and legs during the sessions that last for 45-60 minutes. You can be fully or partially undressed depending on your comfort level; make sure to see a doctor before going through with the prenatal session because it’s possible they could worsen by having this type of treatment done while pregnancy.


Prenatal massage is a good option for pregnant women who want to relax and relieve their mild tension.


Couple's Massage

A couple’s massage is meant to be relaxing and therapeutic for both parties. You can enjoy the benefits of a regular massage while also spending time with your partner or friend! The spa will offer other treatments, such as pedicures, facials, body scrubs in addition to massages if you choose that option from their menu.


There's nothing quite like a massage with your significant other! The shared experience of being touched by someone you love can be such an intimate moment, that it is also known as the 'couples' massage. What's included in the price of a full body massage? It always depend on the store. In some higher-end SPA premises, a typical full body massage will include a foot massage or scrub, full body massage and a scalp and face neck massage.


How long it should last?

A typical massage should last for about an hour. Is there a time limit? There is no set length of time for a massage. The duration generally depends on the type of problem being addressed and how you react to it.


For example, if your neck muscles are tight as a result of stress or tension then an hour-plus-long session may be needed in order to loosen them up.




Is there anything to pay attention when getting treatment from a therapist

The first thing to pay attention when getting treatment from a therapist is the expertise and experience of that particular person. It's best if you find a therapist who can help with your specific needs, such as someone experienced in working with people recovering from trauma or abuse. If you're not sure about qualifications, ask for recommendations and see how long they've been in practice.


The second thing to pay attention when getting treatment from a therapist is the type of therapy they use. It's important that you find someone who uses a style or approach that feels right for you and your situation, so ask about this too!


Last thing to pay attention is how much pressure you can take from the therapist. It's important to be honest about what you can handle so that they don't push too far and make it worse.

Should women receive massage during pregnancy?

In general, pregnant women should not receive massage. There are some exceptions to this rule, such as when a woman has been diagnosed with gestational diabetes or is experiencing pregnancy-related back pain. It's important that pregnant women partake in prenatal care and discuss any concerns they may have about the health of their baby with their healthcare provider.


Some doctors say that pregnant women in the first trimester should not receive massage, but your own doctor will tell you what is best for your situation.


Tips on what to wear during the massage session

For your massage session, you should wear loose fitting clothing. You can bring a robe or cotton kimono if the spa does not provide this for guests. It is important to leave any jewellery and watches off during your treatment as well.


Depending on the style of massage you are taking, for aromatherapy massage, clothes should not be worn. But for Thai Massage, it is recommended to wear loose fitting clothing.


Questions to ask your provider before booking an appointment with them- what are their qualifications/education/expertise?

- What is their education, training, and/or experience?

- Do they offer options for treatments to fit my needs or preferences?

- How many other patients do you see in a day on average?

- Are there any restrictions I should know about before booking the appointment (i.e., parking)

- What is your cancellation policy?

Choosing the Right Therapist For Your Needs

To choose the right person, I go with a therapist who is known for working well with. Therapists are not one-size-fits all, and massage therapy is about the two person working together. Hiring a therapist who has experience with your particular issue can be extremely beneficial. A specialist in sports massage therapy may not have the best insights for someone struggling with headache, so it is important to find someone who knows what you are going through and how they work.


Also I go to massage therapist who ask about your issues and be open to questions. Therapists can provide you with great advice on how to work out what is going on, but they cannot fix the problem for you. This may seem like a small detail, but it is important because therapists are not miracle workers! The right therapist will guide you in all of the possible paths to solution!


Should I tip my massage therapist?

The act of tipping is not a gratuity, but an obligation that accompanies the service. In most cases in the United States, it’s your responsibility to give your massage therapist at least $20 as a tip. In Taiwan, some massage therapy keep their price including the tips.


My husband feels that the massage therapists he's had have been more petite than him. In these cases, tipping is necessary to show gratitude after a good session. In his experience, most of the massage therapists are smaller than he is. He typically tips them because they show such dedication and seem to work so hard.


How long should I stay rested right after the massage?

If you have a deep tissue massage or are receiving Thai Massage, it is best to stay resting for an hour after the session. If your massage was soothing and gentle (mostly Swedish), then you can resume regular activities within 15 minutes. It's important not to get too hot from activity right away as this may cause blood flow problems in your muscles.

What I shouldn't do right after receiving a massage

  • Don't forget to drink water because you are need water to help your detoxification happened during and after the massage, to carry away those toxins away from your cells.
  • Don't eat a heavy meal right after massage because a heavy meal will slow down the release of toxins from your cells.
  • Don't take a hot shower right after massage because it can also cause inflammation. Instead, take a cold shower for pain relief. If you just have a aromatherapy oil massage, let the oil be absorbed by your body in another hour.


Tips for Creating an in-Home Spa experience

Making your own home spa experience is easy, says someone - just clear up clutter and light some candles. Play some balinese tunes, put up the diffuser for some nice scent in your room. Or, burn white sages to clean up the air. Prepare your space like you are expecting your lover, and it's true, your inner self is your lover!


Tips for getting the most out of your massage therapy

  • Get hydrated before the session, so your muscle and the whole body is in a relaxed state.
  • Arrive with a light and positive attitude. The massage therapists will be able to sense if you are not feeling excited or happy, so it is important that they know what your emotional state is before the session begins.
  • Be honest about any specific discomfort in areas of concern. It's better for them to work on an area that needs attention rather than neglect it.
  • If you are pregnant, talk with your massage therapist to ensure the safety of both mother and child during your session.
  • Take a shower before the session if possible as this will help remove dirt or sweat from areas that need work on.
  • Breath according to the pressure applied during the massage. In and out.
  • Be open minded about what positions your therapist might want to work on with you during the session.
